About King & Company in Brisbane
RM King began legal practice in Brisbane during the 1890s, later entering local politics and becoming chairman of the Coorparoo Shire Council. An early president of the Local Government Association (1915-1916), he rose to become a member of the Legislative Assembly and ultimately Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Works. The latter portfolio encompassed, among other things, local government: no surprise, then, that the firm established a solid local government practice. Mr Kings political activities did not curtail his endeavours as a lawyer, and GRH Gill joined him in the firm during the 1920s.
Practising under the King & Gill banner, they were joined in time by SG King (Mr Kings son) and JCH Gill (Mr Gills son), and later by GWN (Geoff) Fynes-Clinton. SG King served as Local Government Association secretary (during the 1960s) and Geoff Fynes-Clinton served on the board of what is now LG Super (until his death in 1987). Rebranded as King & Company in 1969, the firm expanded during the 1970s into a broad-based 13-partner practice (one of the larger Queensland firms of the day).
A de-merger in 1980 contracted the firm but set it upon a course leading to its latter-day iteration as a commercial firm focusing strongly, though by no means solely, upon local government and other institutional clients. Geoff Fynes-Clintons legacy remains, enlivened by sons Stephen (1985-2003, now practising at the Bar) and Tim (1989, now the executive partner). With eight partners and a business model that has delivered steady growth, enabling it to weather cyclical crises in the economy without shedding staff or compromising the breadth or quality of its services, the firm is ideally positioned to seize the opportunities that the future offers.
